Biography

Han Hyo-Joo was born on February 22, 1987 in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. Her mother worked as an elementary school teacher before becoming an inspector for public schools and her father worked in the military. As a child, Han Hyo-Joo was good in sports and enjoyed track & field. In her sophomore year of high school, Han Hyo-Ju moved to Seoul and attended Bulgok High School. Although her father, conservative & strict, opposed her move to Seoul she was able to go forth with her wishes. After high school, Han Hyo-Joo majored in theatre at Dongguk University. According to Han Hyo-Ju, her personality fits her blood type-A classification: calm, doesn't get angry easily, & able to endure without a lot of expression.[1]

In 2003, Han Hyo-Ju won the grand prize for the Miss Bing-geure contest, which attracted the attention from the entertainment world (Bing-geure is a Korean food company). In 2005, Han Hyo-Ju received her first acting roles in the MBC sitcom “Nonstop 5” and the movie “My Boss, My Teacher”. Her debut performances went largely unnoticed. In 2006 Han Hyo-Ju received her first leading role in the KBS2 drama “Spring Waltz”. Director Yun Seok-Ho of “Spring Waltz” stated that he first got the idea to cast Han Hyo-Joo after browsing the Internet and coming across her picture. Yun Seok-Ho felt she still held the purity of a child and a sense of mysteriousness which suited her character well. Han Hyo-Joo also stated that working on “Spring Waltz” was difficult, largely due to her inexperience in acting.[2]

Han Hyo-Joo's first leading performance in a feature film came with the 2006 independent film “Ad-Lib Night,” helmed by well-regarded director Lee Yoon-Ki. Han Hyo-Joo's experience working on “Ad-Lib Night” went far more smoothly than her first leading role in a drama series. Han Hyo-Joo recalled that the one month shoot seemed to zoom by and wished it could have lasted longer. Her performance was enthusiastically received by critics and Han Hyo-Joo received “Best Actress” awards from the 26th Korean Movie Critics Organization and the 20th Singapore International Film Festival.

Han Hyo-Joo's commercial break-out role came with her performance in the popular 2009 SBS drama series “Brilliant Legacy,” alongside actor/singer Lee Seung-Ki. The drama series, mixing a healthy dose of Korean melodrama with a Charles Dickens' “Great Expectations” like storyline, captured the attention of Koreans throughout the summer of 2009. “Brilliant Legacy”regularly received ratings in excess of 40% and catapulted Han Hyo-Joo as one of the more popular young actresses in Korea. With her popularity, media reports and gossip magazines began to speculate on who Han Hyo-Joo was dating.

In 2010, Han Hyo-Joo branched out of her comfort zone and took the lead role in the MBC historical drama series “Dong Yi”.

But jjinjjay she looks so pretty. How to explain that, effortlessly beautiful. Many many times, the ones that strive hard to look pretty, end up don' t look pretty at all. The ones that dont try to look pretty, end up look so beautiful. This is not a wisdom saying, it is a matter of fact. You can witness that easily. And words come up with that are: understated, elegant, classy, natural, chic, effortless, sharp look, and so on. And it is about the whole presentation of the person's visual. The person' s vibes, eye gaze, clever look, vacuous look, thoughtful, empty look, etc. Anyway, HH-J is one beautiful human being. It would be challenging for her taking a role as a light-headed woman, or a plain dumb character. Not due to a certain syndrome or medical situation, but just being a dumb person. I dare her to take that role. It is gonna be difficult because she is the opposite of that. That would take high level of acting skill to perform such role.

She has to be one of the most beautiful to hit big and small screens and I would seriously take a look at her for any future Marvel projects (or anything hollywood) if I were a rep from /MCU, etc. (hint to producers) - she'd be a major star. She definitely demands the viewers' attention though, so may not be welcome in western mainstream (due to most A-list egos)...it would be a huge loss to not accept her talents here in the states. Regardless, I'll look for anything she is a part of. She always seems to choose good scripts/characters/projects to work on.

I also notice in most of her films, the director has her running. Has probably ran 1000 km so far. Guess being a track star in HS set that idea in motion. Anyway, she's also fantastic on a piano. Is there a talent this kid doesn't have? As for who she acts with, i could care less, so long as she acts. Bravo!

I love your character in it so much. i'm amazed you came back in W after so many years in hiatus for Kdrama. It is really great, unique, and most creative kdrama i've watched until now. It is a breakthrough and i feel it motivated other drama to be more creative also. Hmm, I really wonder why you choose to play in many movies than tv drama. In South Korea, TV drama is prestigious and also worthed to fight for, and also they have been exported internationally in many country so helping you becoming more popular and success rapidly. Please consider to play in more kdrama every year, i'll try to keep watch your drama :D

I didn't watch By Land and Sky until recently since I couldn't find it anywhere online. Found it recently, although there are certain scenes missing, I still made do with it. I love it when she plays (and she always does!) kind-hearted character. Eun Young was endearing, Ji-Su was so sweet to everyone, Eun Chae treats the poor equally despite her nobility, Eun Sung is generous and compassionate, and Dong Yi is the epitome of love. Can't wait to see what her latest character Yeon Joo from W brings us.

But one day, during my summer vacations, this semester, when I switched different channels, I ended up in a soap opera channel and began watching Sorpresas del destino (Shining Inheritance) and I enjoyed it, but not the final episode. I think Han Hyo Goo is a very promising Young actress. I´m looking forward to watch another drama of her. (But please, I want a more exciting ending).

jo hana Dec 18 2015 1:38 pm @tyron-yeah!eun sung & dong yi doesn't look like the same person obviously because of the hairstyles from both drama,its really amazing how hairstyles can make a big difference with our looks & because han hyo joo tends to change her hairstyles every now & then so people hardly recognize her she even said it herself in one of her interviews, she doesn't really have that distinctive look coz of frequent hairstyle change but her smile for sure is a distinctive one!

ElBee Oct 21 2015 11:53 am I just finished watching Brilliant Legacy (w/her, Lee Seung Gi, and Bae Soo Bin) and was amazed at how effective her expressions were...I am not a big crier and really dislike the odd acting trend in Kdramas of crying/wailing with their mouths stretched wide to show their molars!), but man just as her joyful interactions made me grin ear to ear her sadness and actually-pretty crying scenes had me investing in Kleenex stocks. I am sad to see so few series in her list and hope she takes another leading role soon.

Dong Yi is really my fave...I watched it over and over again ,,,, my rating is 9.75 out of 10 and .25 dissatisfaction goes to some minor error in episode where she was struck by a sword at the back , but when they treated her wounds the physician treated her in front near to her chest.....hahaha...peace!!!

But for me the star has to be Han Hyo Joo (also known as ''Dongi'') the girl is simply a breath of fresh air.

but I am disappointed that she did not persisted to get few mistakes checked and re shoot the seen where she is holding her 2 month old dead baby in her arm, you see the baby's hand move very clearly over 5 times.
